MV Parent U: "Angst," raising anxiety awareness

MV Parent U presents "Angst," a 56-minute film that explores anxiety, its causes, effects and treatments

Angst features candid interviews with kids and young adults who suffer, or have suffered, from anxiety and what they’ve learned about it. The film includes discussions with mental health experts about the causes of anxiety and its sociological effects, as well as help, resources and tools.

Please join us to hear from a panel of local high school students about their perspectives on Mental Health.  Students will give a short presentation and then answer questions including:
* What do you think is important for parents to know and keep in mind as they guide and support their kids who might be demonstrating some signs of risk or are already struggling with their mental health?
* What are some effective approaches and ways parents have been helpful in supporting you or your friends?
* What role does social media play related to teen mental health issues, in general? What should the role of parents be in supporting and protecting their child?
* What advice would you give to parents with kids who have mental health needs?

All families are welcome to attend although this event is targeted for parents and teens in grades 5-8.

Doors open at 6pm, Agency / Youth Resource Tables present will be:

Wednesday, Sept. 18, 6:30-8 PM at Crittenden Middle School Auditorium. Doors open at 6 p.m.

Mountain View Parent University presents a discussion and showing of “Like,” a documentary that explores the impact of social media on our lives and the effects of technology on the brain. Social media is a tool and social platforms are a place to connect, share, and care… but is that what's really happening? How can parents and students gain the skills to self-regulate?

After the film, there will be a discussion facilitated by Common Sense Media and MVWSD staff. Spanish translation will be available during the discussion panel, and the film will have Spanish subtitles. Child care will be provided. Please RSVP prior to the event at Eventbrite here. Mental Health Basics
Learn the basics of mental health, including: definitions, coping with stress, when it is important to seek help, combating stigma, and how to get help in our county.

October 23, 6:30-8 p.m. Doors open at 6 p.m., Graham MUR

A team of professionals from Palo Alto University will present foundational information about mental health and mental illness and how mental health challenges may look different in different people or cultures. Participants will engage in interactive dialogue about how to maintain good mental health, and how to combat stigma around mental illness. The training also discusses what to do when someone needs support or help.

Spanish interpretation and child care will be provided.

Talking to Your Child About Sexuality
“Being an 'Askable Adult' Wednesday, Jan. 29 from 6:30- 8 p.m. Crittenden Middle School MUR
Presented by Health Connected, a Bay Area health education leader, parents will learn the why, what, how and when of talking with your kids about sexual health. Join us for a fun and interactive workshop that will inspire and assist trusted adults to engage their children in open and honest conversation.  The session is appropriate for adults with children of any age, and definitely relevant for adults with children approaching puberty through their teen years. Doors open at 6 p.m. Come early to connect with resources!

She is English language curriculum author of English 3-D, READ 180 and Academic Toolkit; Global and national speaker and expert on English Learners and language acquisition; and has a 30 year career focus on equipping youths from diverse backgrounds with the language and literacy skills necessary to be truly college ready.
