Current Projects
Summer 2026
This summer, our campus underwent several important infrastructure improvements to increase school safety and efficiency, as well as create cooler, nature-based areas for student learning and play.
Roofing Upgrades
Crews are finishing the new roofs. New shingles have replaced aging materials with lighter-colored surfaces that improve campus heating and cooling efficiency. Roofing construction will be completed and areas cleaned up by the first day of school.
Outdoor Learning Project
Thank you for your patience as campus construction scheduled for this summer goes longer than we expected. When it’s finished, our school will have new outdoor learning areas that include shaded seating, colorful spaces, outdoor classrooms, gardens and native plants—supporting hands-on learning, student well-being and environmental stewardship.
What you need to know:
Contractors will readjust fencing and clean up areas outside fencing before Aug. 12. Portions of the blacktop areas will remain temporarily unavailable during landscaping, site work, painting, and equipment installation. Please click here to see a map of construction areas. Work behind the fences will continue until early November.
Currently the field is closed. The contractor plans to reopen the field after irrigation modifications are complete. The blacktop and playground areas are open for play.
As anticipated and similar to the Vargas project, some furnishings, including outdoor tables and playground equipment will arrive and be installed after the start of school.
MVWSD and construction management will work closely with the contractor to ensure student and staff safety near construction areas, ensure as much access to important parts of campus, and limit disruptions from noise and dust.
Fiber Replacement
Internet fiber infrastructure was replaced to support improved network reliability and performance throughout the school, requiring trenching.
Thanks to our community, these improvements are the result of 2020’s Measure T bond. Thank you for your patience with construction as we work to upgrade our campus.
2025-26
Restroom Building
Standalone restroom facility construction, begun in 2024, was completed in November 2025. This project was a partnership between the District and City of Mountain View. Restrooms are maintained by the City and provide a convenient option for public use after school hours. For safety reasons, it will not be open during the school day.
The new public restrooms near the school field are now open daily during non-school hours until 30 minutes past sunset. If the restrooms are locked during these hours, the public should call the Mountain View Police Department Non-Emergency at (650) 903-6344.
The restrooms will be temporarily closed for a time in the future for additional work on the door-locking mechanism. Signs will be posted with this date. Thank you for your patience during construction.
Summer 2025
Landels Elementary underwent an essential roof replacement project this summer.
In early August, Landel’s front parking lots/drop off area were closed for restriping.
Winter 2024-25
Restroom Building
A prefabricated, standalone toilet building was under construction at the southeast corner of the field near the Latham Street tot lot. The restroom design and placement were determined through a community input process held in Spring 2021. This standalone facility will be maintained by the City and will provide a convenient option for public use after school hours.
Summer 2024
Window installation
Windows were replaced at Landels. Window installation work is needed to replace older windows and increase energy efficiency.
Blacktop
Landels received a blacktop surface in June 2024. Due to wear and tear exposing unsafe cracks, the existing blacktop playground will be resurfaced and striped. The school's blacktop areas will be off-limits during this time.
School Year 2023-24
Outdoor Greening and Learning Spaces
It’s important that our schoolyards are flexible and dynamic spaces that support equitable, diverse learning and recreational activities, which enhance the physical and mental well-being of students and promote a connection to our natural world. In the 2023-24 school year, MVWSD embarked on creating outdoor greening and learning spaces at each school that will provide shade, plants and outdoor areas for learning and play. Construction on all campuses (except for Jose Antonio Vargas Elementary which was completed in 2025) is expected to commence and be completed in summer 2026, assuming the district gets state architectural approval in time.
Locks
Beginning Nov. 27, 2023, the field gates will be locked during the school day as part of a new perimeter controls system. The public will continue to have access to school fields in the evenings and on weekends through a system of automatic locking/unlocking gates. For student and staff safety, it's very important for our school to limit points of entry during school hours. Additionally, staff members will be able to access classrooms and offices using key cards, instead of keys. If gates malfunction, call (650) 526-3248 x1004.
HVAC
HVAC was be replaced in the Library. The existing HVAC system has already been updated to include MERV-13 filters, which is the highest-grade filter available for our units. This project started onsite construction work in Fall 2023.
School Year 2022-23
Lighting
New lights and/or bollard style light posts were installed to illuminate pedestrians’ path of travel between campus and parking lots. The light locations were determined by photometric survey data. This additional lighting is an important safety measure for staff members and guests using the campus in the evenings and winter late afternoons.
Window installation
Needed to replace older windows, a window installation project is planned. The start date is yet to be determined.
Security Cameras
Security cameras in public areas were installed at all school sites as a way to increase safety for students and staff members by deterring misconduct and preventing vandalism. Members of the schools’ communities were engaged in a series of feedback meetings in Winter 2022.
Emergency Power
An emergency generator, for use only when power is not on at the school, will be placed on the west side of the library building near the parking area. The generator will ensure important District data systems continue to run during power outages. Installation date is Winter 2023.

Measure T, the $259 million bond issue passed in 2020, included plans for a variety of projects that will increase safety, efficiency and provide for short-term growth at our schools.

Security/Perimeter Fencing
The District's improvements to perimeter fencing and adding gates to completely enclose campus and fields in order to secure campuses and make COVID screening more efficient is almost complete. Fencing and gates are ornamental metal to match existing at campus frontage and 6’ high chain link fencing and gates at property lines and back of campus.
The purpose of fencing is to control points of entry during school hours. It’s important to note that the public will have access to fields outside school hours. The intention is to secure campuses when students are present, and have gates open through a lock management system in the evenings and on weekends.
Landels installed a new six-foot metal ornamental fencing around the library building, new gate at the office entrance, and six-foot metal fencing at the end of the classroom wings near the parking lot toward the MUR. A new gate was added in the back at the entrance of Mercy Avenue, and six-foot fence around the outside edges of the field and along the Stevens Creek Trail side of campus, securing the entire field.

We scheduled an additional meeting for our school community and neighbors on January 12, 2021 . Please click here to view the results of the online exchange of ideas during the meeting. MVWSD wants to make sure we have heard all of the considerations so that we can further improve the proposed plan and build consensus around a design that works for stakeholder groups.

HVAC
Replacement and improvements of HVAC equipment was completed this summer in mechanical closets and in classrooms, offices, MUR across the campus. Our schools’ HVAC systems have been updated to include MERV-13 filters, which is the highest-grade filter available for our units, or air purifiers with filtration ratings at least as high as the MERV-13. Additionally dampers on all of our units are open to full capacity and will pull in outside air.
Solar
Landels' two solar arrays near the playground structures are complete. Not only will these structures support solar panels to save the district $600,000 annually in electrical costs, they will provide much-needed shade. Some non-heritage trees had to be removed to make way for the arrays, but MVWSD will replant two native trees for every one removed.

Public Restrooms
Landels will purchase and install a prefabricated, standalone toilet building. The unit will be maintained by the City and may be used afterhours by the public. This is an important security measure to ensure adults are not mixing with children in student restrooms. Construction scheduled for November 2021 to February 2022.

Security cameras
One of the projects identified in the Mountain View Whisman School District's Master Facility Plan and the Measure T Bond was the need for security cameras in public areas at all school sites as a way to increase safety for students and staff members by deterring misconduct and preventing vandalism. Members of the schools’ communities will engage in a series of feedback meetings through Jan. 2022 before the plan for security cameras is finalized.
Window Replacement
The District will replace existing, older single pane windows at Landels in 2023.
New Classroom Building
In 2023-24, the administration building and 2 classrooms will be demolished to make way for construction of new 2-story 15,000 SF building to house administration and ten standard size classrooms. This project will house some of the short-term growth that predicted for Landels. The project will include temporary housing for administration and classrooms displaced during construction and reconfiguration of pickup/drop-off area and parking along West Dana St.
2017-19 Classroom Modernization and a New Multi-Use Room
(18-month project funded by Measure G)
Summer 2019
Accessible ramps were installed at classroom doors. District-owned portable classrooms were refreshed this summer, meaning they will get new paint, carpet and whiteboards. Unused, leased portable classrooms will shuttered, and removal of these portables will happen in summer 2020.
The school got a new sign in the front. This sign, paid for with Measure G funds, will include accurate school and district names. Funding for construction and capital improvements, like school signs, come from restricted funds that can be used only for that purpose. The District used an innovative approach to piggyback on existing, competitive local government contracts to lower the sign cost and expedite installation.
In summer 2020, construction was completed on Landels’ inclusive playground, replacing the middle play structure. Landels Elementary received funding for an all-inclusive playgrounds from Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors to build an appropriate, inclusive play space for the medically fragile children who attend MVWSD. Truly inclusive playgrounds far surpass Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) minimum requirements, with smooth surfacing, and custom-designed climbing, sliding, swinging, and spinning zones that improve balance, spatial orientation, focus and motor skills. The design supports recreation and social interaction for people with autism, sensory challenges, cognitive, developmental and physical disabilities – as well as those without special needs.
January 2019
The conversion of the old MUR to library and special education rooms is complete.
During Summer 2018
The classroom modernization, administration office reconfiguration, and expansion of one kindergarten classroom was completed by the end of summer 2018. The modernization and renovation of the existing multi-use room into the new library and two special education classrooms started in Summer 2018 and will be complete by winter 2018.
Containers to house classroom furnishings and materials during the summer were delivered in mid May and placed on the blacktop at the back of the school. Improvements to the school parking lot also happened over the summer, with the goal of making traffic flow safer and more efficient.
Over the 2017-18 school year
Construction work was concentrated behind the fence on the MUR, which is set to be completed in June. Work was finished on the creation of the MUR site pad, digging of the footings, installation of foundations, and hanging of steel.
As you know, the District has worked very hard over the years to do the work, funded by Measure G, to make facilities improvements and renovations at every school a reality.
