Welcome to Mountain View Safe routes to Schools!

In 2011, the City launched a Safe Routes to School (SRTS) program to promote walking and bicycling to school for Mountain View students and families.

Why Walk and roll to School

Walking and biking to school keeps children happy, healthy and focused. It establishes healthy habits and an active lifestyle that is more likely to continue as children age. It promotes social inclusion, functional independence and spatial intelligence. And it improves transportation safety, reduces traffic congestion and helps us all combat climate change.

E-Bikes, E-Scooters, and E-Motorcycles

The Mountain View Police Department reminded us that under state law, that:
   * Riders under 18 must wear a helmet when riding a bicycle or e-bike, and
   * Riders of Class 3 e-bikes (up to 28 mph) must be at least 16 years old and wear a helmet at all times, and
   * Higher-powered electric motorcycles, often called “e-motos,” are not considered e-bikes and may require registration, insurance, and a valid license to operate.

Families are encouraged to verify that their child’s vehicle is legal for their age and intended use, review safe riding practices, and remind students to obey traffic laws. Please review the information here in English and here in Spanish
