Parents' Role

Distance learning specifically means that there is a physical separation between the teacher and the student. E-learning requires the student to have a device and may or may not be in the presence of the teacher. In a distance learning setting, instruction can occur through workbooks, packets or online activities (synchronous and/or asynchronous).

In order to have both e-learning and learning using paper “consumables” (example: workbooks), parents should:

1. Ensure students have a device and access to the internet. For help with this, please contact your principal or School Community Engagement Facilitator.
2. Pick up students’ journals, workbooks and other items from school the week of April 13. Your principal will contact you with specific pick up information. While not mandatory, the April 13 week is your opportunity to get your children’s workbooks if you’d like them to work both online and on paper.

Video conferencing
Video conferencing using Zoom is one method teachers will use to contact students. MVWSD has put safeguards in place to make video conferencing as secure as possible for students and teachers. Please review our online security safeguards.

Please review parents’ role in video conferencing. We are assuming students’ and parents’ consent to these parameters unless parents opt out students from video conferencing. If you do not want your child to participate, please inform your teacher. Your student can still participate in Distance Learning through phone calls and instructional materials.

For Families
We want Distance Learning to be workable for families during this time of public health crisis. We recognize that students will have different abilities to engage in online learning, and that for younger students especially, exposure to screen time should be limited and broken up by interactions with adults and siblings, games, independent activity, and free time. We know students are not used to learning in a completely remote environment. Check in with your students about what they are finding challenging or confusing about their work. Encourage them to reach out to teachers if they are struggling.
