Transitional Kindergarten Information and Frequently Asked Questions

In response to the passage of The Kindergarten Readiness Act (Senate Bill 1381), Mountain View Whisman School District (MVWSD) will enroll students who turn 5 years old between September 2 and December 2 in Transitional Kindergarten (TK) classes for the entering school year. What is transitional kindergarten (TK)?

A transitional kindergarten is the first year of a two-year kindergarten program that uses a modified kindergarten curriculum that is age and developmentally appropriate. Pursuant to law, (EC 48000[c]), a child is eligible for transitional kindergarten if a child will have his or her fifth birthday:
For the entering school year, on or after Sept. 2 and/or on before Dec. 2.


How do I enroll my child in Transitional Kindergarten?

What is the structure of the TK program?  

TK classes will be held on the on several school campuses depending on enrollment.  In the 2018-19 school year, the District offered classes at Theuerkauf.   TK full-day classes follow the same schedule as our kindergarten classes, approximately 8:30 am to 2:00 p.m.


Will TK be held at our neighborhood school?

Will MVWSD provide transportation to/from TK for my child? 

MVWSD does not provide transportation for TK students.


Is there childcare provided on the school campuses that offer TK?  

Parents are responsible for arranging their children’s before and after school care.  The YMCA will be offering morning and after school care at most sites.   Please contact the YMCA for registration and details 650-969-9622


What kind of background/experience will the TK teachers have?  

The teachers hired to teach TK are fully credentialed.

Is attendance in TK mandatory? 

TK is not mandatory. Parents may choose to not enroll their children in TK.


Is there a cost to enroll in TK?  

No. TK is part of free public education.


If I choose not to enroll my child in TK, will my child have a reduced chance of getting into kindergarten at his/her neighborhood school the next year?  

Kindergarten students are enrolled in their neighborhood schools. All students enrolled in TK will have equal status to all others in their priority group.  Please click here for information on the District enrollment priorities.


Can I request early admission into TK?  

No, early admission is to TK is not available.
