TK/K Afterschool Hour Update
Staff presented data about the new program for transitional kindergarten and kindergarten students to take sports classes after school in the hour between their dismissal and elementary school dismissal.
Mid Year Academic Benchmarks Data Report
Staff presented an overview of i-Ready Diagnostic 2 and Middle of Year mCLASS DIBELS results. i-Ready helps us track student growth in reading and math in all grades, three times a year. mCLASS DIBELS helps us check early reading skills and screen for reading risk. It’s given to all K–2 students three times a year (and K–5 at Castro). This assessment helps identify reading challenges early so students can get timely support.
We use these results as a first step to guide instructional groups, provide support or enrichment, and monitor progress toward school goals. We also look at other data and follow up with more detailed assessments when needed.
Data highlights:
Reading (i-Ready)
* Overall reading scores are steady compared to last year.
* Some schools and grade levels showed gains, while others declined.
* Growth varies by grade, with steady gains in some cohorts.
* Achievement gaps continue for some student groups (Hispanic/Latino and SED students)
Math (i-Ready)
* Math scores are also stable year to year.
* Some schools and grade levels showed notable improvement (Castro and Mistral)
* Growth in math is slightly lower than in reading.
* Achievement gaps continue for some student groups (Hispanic/Latino and SED students)
What we’re doing next
* Continue focused instruction, targeted interventions, and after-school supports.
* Adjust classroom teaching based on student data.
* Review progress with staff, School Site Councils, and ELACs.
* Continue math curriculum and program improvements.
* Provide ongoing professional learning for teachers.
* Update the District’s Strategic Plan after Orenda Education’s recommendations.
* Review and improve assessments to ensure they are age-appropriate and give timely feedback to teachers and families.
California Dashboard Report
Staff provided an update on the results of the 2025 California Dashboard released in November 2025. The Dashboard displays performance on multiple state and local measures that assess how well districts and schools are meeting the needs of their students. Here are the highlights:
Chronic Absenteeism:
MVWSD is rated Medium. The District’s chronic absenteeism rate was 10.9% in 2024–25, a 0.8% decrease from 2023–24. The District’s continued focus on attendance contributed to this overall improvement.
Suspensions:
The suspension rate is 2.4%, a 0.6% decrease from 2023–24.
English Learner Progress:
MVWSD is rated Medium, with 49.7% of English Learners making progress toward English proficiency. The number of English Learners increased from 710 (2022–23) to 792 (2024–25).
English Language Arts (ELA):
MVWSD maintained an overall rating of High (+34.2 points above standard)
Some student groups continue to have Low ELA ratings, including students experiencing homelessness, socioeconomically disadvantaged students, Hispanic/Latino students, and Long-Term English Learners.
English Learners and Students with Disabilities improved from Low to Medium.
Math:
MVWSD maintained an overall rating of High (+24 points above standard).
Several student groups remain Low or Very Low in math, including English Learners, students experiencing homelessness, socioeconomically disadvantaged students, Hispanic/Latino students, and Long-Term English Learners.
School Improvement Status (2025–26):
Three of four schools previously identified for support have exited Additional Targeted Support and Improvement (ATSI) or Targeted Support and Improvement (TSI): Bubb, Landels, and Stevenson.
Castro remains in ATSI due to ELA and math performance and chronic absenteeism among English Learners, socioeconomically disadvantaged students, and Hispanic/Latino students.
Imai is newly eligible for TSI based on the suspension rate for Students with Disabilities.
LCAP Midyear Reports
Staff reported on the Local Control and Accountability Plan (LCAP) and Budget Overview for Parents (BOP), which show our midyear results for LCAP goals, spending and progress on LCAP actions.
Resolution Acknowledging Black History Month
The Trustees passed a resolution acknowledging Black History Month, beginning Feb. 1, 2026. Black History Month is a time to honor the contributions, leadership, and resilience of Black Americans—past and present. It’s also an opportunity to reflect on our shared history, recognize the ways inequities persist, and recommit to making sure every student feels seen, valued, and supported.
