I want to take pictures of students or film them in school to share. Is that OK?
FERPA laws require a parent or guardian's permission (or a student's permission if the student is over 18) before you can take a photo or videotape the student on school property. Try determine if they are "do not publish" as listed in PowerSchool. A media release is needed for any picture of a child that is "easily identifiable." (frames that clearly show a kid's face, or any two of these elements together: Face, voice and printed name.) Pictures of crowds (i.e. more than 12 people in the frame and faces not that visible) and groups at public events and performances do not require releases for publication.
The District does not publish the combination of minors' names and their likenesses without specific permission from their parents. Staff members can review the guidelines in detail here and download the media release form here.
