MVWSD secures landmark deal to help offset enrollment growth

MVWSD has secured a landmark deal from real estate developer Sobrato to help offset the cost of new school facilities needed to accommodate future students generated by the growth in North Bayshore.

MVWSD will receive a one-time payment of $5.5 million from Sobrato, which is working to develop 1255 Pear Avenue by adding 635 residential units and a new 231,210 square foot office building within the North Bayshore Precise Plan (“NBPP”). The Mountain View-Los Altos Union High School District will also receive a payment.

While this payment will not generate sufficient funds to provide the necessary school facilities to house the students anticipated to be generated from the project, MVWSD is grateful Sobrato has taken the lead.

“I want to thank Sobrato for being the first developer to understand the importance of the value our schools to our community and for their willingness to help preserve it,” said Superintendent Dr. Ayindé Rudolph. “And thanks to the city council for understanding schools are an essential community benefit and approving this agreement.”

While the estimated total cost of a new school in North Bayshore to serve the 9850 new units planned for the area is $88 million, $5.5 million is a good start to solving a larger problem in our community, Dr. Rudolph said. MVWSD is facing long-term growth of 2,500 new students from North Bayshore, in addition to new developments throughout the city

“We are grateful for the work that District staff members contributed to secure this deal,” said Board President Tamara Wilson. “The Board of Trustees and staff have taken the lead in advocating for our students and the needs of our schools. Together we have served as partners in developing and executing a clear and directed plan of action to fund future schools without imposing an undue burden on Mountain View’s existing taxpayers.”

MVWSD will continue to work with the City and developers to find a creative solution for addressing the problem of long-term growth and creating complete neighborhoods that will serve all residents.

Survey coming soon: LCAP/Strategic Plan process

The District is beginning its annual process of writing the LCAP (Local Control Accountability Plan). Your input from the survey will guide the development of our District’s three-year plan and inform the update of the District’s Strategic Plan. These documents are the blueprints that guide all of the District’s work for the benefit of our students.

The survey has been revised to include questions about school and District climate. Look for an email soon about the LCAP survey, and for a meeting at your school to learn more about the LCAP/ Strategic Plan process.
