New Distinguished Schools: Gabriela Mistral and Stevenson

Gabriela Mistral Elementary and Stevenson Elementary are being honored under the 2020 California Distinguished Schools Award Program by the California Department of Education (CDE).

The program recognizes outstanding education programs and practices. Schools are awarded for closing the achievement gap and for achieving exceptional student performance.

The California Distinguished Schools Program recognizes schools that have made exceptional gains in implementing the academic content and performance standards adopted by the State Board of Education for all students.

The Distinguished Schools program recognizes elementary and middle/high schools in alternate years and allows eligible schools to apply once every two years.

MVWSD has had 11 statewide Blue Ribbon and Distinguished School honors in the last six years:

  • Bubb Elementary - California Distinguished Elementary School
  • Crittenden Middle - California Gold Ribbon School,  California Distinguished Middle School
  • Gabriela Mistral Elementary - California Distinguished Elementary School
  • Graham Middle - California Gold Ribbon School, California Distinguished Middle School (twice)
  • Huff Elementary - National Blue Ribbon School, California Distinguished Elementary School
  • Monta Loma Elementary - California Distinguished Elementary School
  • Stevenson Elementary - California Distinguished Elementary School

For your comments and review: Proposed dress code

After hearing from parents and students, MVWSD is proposing a new dress code. The new version is based on national and local resources with a desire to make the code more modern and inclusive of all students.

Feedback from parents, students and staff on the proposed dress code will be collected  and reviewed through Jan. 15. Please use this form for review of the current and proposed policies and to share your comments about the proposed dress code

Timeline:

The Board of Trustees and staff are planning on six months of time for education and outreach before implementation. This means adoption at the Jan. 23, 2020 Board meeting is needed in order to implement a new dress code in August 2020.

Update: Process for selecting new Science materials

Two teams of District educators and parents are working to research new K-8 Science materials that align with California Common Core Standards. The teams will have recommendations for approval this year and implementation in the 2020-21 school year.

Each Task Force is made up of classroom teachers from each school, coaches, site administrators and parents. At its recent meetings, the task force groups reviewed key shifts in each framework and revised the rubrics used to review materials.

The Science Task Force reviewed materials at the Santa Clara County Office of Education on December 11, 17, and 18 and have decided to pilot two programs:

  • California Inspire Science - published by McGraw Hill
  • Bring Science Alive! - published by Teachers’ Curriculum Institute

The middle school science teachers and STEAM teachers at elementary schools on the committee will pilot each curriculum for five weeks this spring. After the materials are reviewed and piloted, the task force groups will make a recommendation for Board of Trustees approval for implementation in the 2020-21 school year. Parents will have the opportunity to review the curriculum before approval.
