District growth update: East Whisman approved, Terra Bella coming up

Thank you to our school supporters who attended the Mountain View City Council meeting Tuesday night to speak in support of the City, developers and the District working together to develop a consistent approach for how to provide for school growth.

East Whisman: The City approved the East Whisman Precise Plan that guides future development in that area, and committed to work with MVWSD and MVLA on a “school strategy” for the East Whisman area. The East Whisman Precise Plan as approved includes only minimum community benefits, but Council directed City staff to return with a school strategy in Jan./Feb.

Terra Bella: On Nov. 18, the City is holding a public hearing for the Terra Bella vision plan. Please attend to support the importance of the City’s focus on developing a school strategy. We need to let Council know each time development plans are heard that school strategy should be defined as part of these plans.

Growth is coming: It is estimated that up to 20,000 new residential units will be added in Mountain View in the next 10 to 15 years. Much of this growth is happening in the northern portion of our district. This growth likely will result in almost 2,500 new students to our schools. This means MVWSD may need the equivalent of two new elementary schools plus an additional middle school

The value that our schools brings is such a fundamental part of our community’s fabric and directly influences Mountain View’s livability, and we want to make sure we preserve this value as MVWSD grows. To learn more about the District’s advocacy and planning for growth, click on

Board meeting preview: I-Ready, Dashboard update and site plans

The Board of Trustees will meet tonight at 6 p.m. To view the full agenda, please click here

The Board will hear a presentation on I-Ready. I-Ready diagnostic assessments are being used in Reading and Math for the 2019-20 school year. These assessments take the place of the former District benchmarks and provide teachers and families meaningful data to understand student strengths and best support student growth. In addition to the diagnostic assessments, the instruction program through i-Ready provides all students across the District with an interactive learning environment that provides individualized lessons based on each student's strengths and opportunities for growth. Look for more information about the detailed parent report you will receive in January.

Dr. Rudolph will present an update on progress toward Strategic Plan goals and Board goals.

The Board is expected to approve each school’s Single Plan for Student Achievement (SPSA), the document that represents a school’s cycle of continuous improvement of student performance. The plans are the result of a collaborative effort between the school staff and members of the School Site Council (SSC) with input from the school community and site advisory groups including the English Learner Advisory Council (ELAC). Draft site plans have been available for Board of Trustee and public review through the District website since October 8, 2019.

High Fives: Fearkauf, Second Harvest video and Dia de los Muertos

It was so much fun to see the whole community come together at Theuerkauf’s Fearkauf Fest and enjoy the Friday evening, complete with a haunted house, games and painting their pumpkins. Kudos to all the parent and staff volunteers who made it possible! See the pictures here.

The Gabriela Mistral school community came together for a gorgeous and meaningful Dia de los Muertos celebration last weekend. We are grateful to all who made this event happen! See the photo here.

We are proud of #MVWSD's partnership with Second Harvest of Silicon Valley. Check out this amazing video (MVWSD starts at 2:41 min) about how MVWSD serves the community all year long. Thank you to our Food and Nutrition Services for their work and to the County of Santa Clara for their support of our families.
