COVID vaccinations for children 5-11 years are happening now
After much anticipation, COVID-19 vaccinations for kids ages 5-11 are underway. Now is the time to check in with your healthcare provider to ask any questions you may have about your child's vaccination.

MVWSD has requested that Santa Clara County provide free, mobile vaccination events at our schools for our students. We will update you as we know more about the specifics and the dates.

Parents and guardians can visit www.sccfreevax.org now to sign up for an appointment or to find a convenient walk-in location. If initial available appointments are reserved, continue to check back as additional slots open.

Among other options, there is a drop-in vaccination site TOMORROW, Saturday, Nov. 6, 10:00am - 5:00pm at the Waldorf School of the Peninsula, 160 N. Rengstorff Avenue.

From the Santa Clara County Dept of Public Health, here’s what parents can expect:
  * Your child will need two shots
  * The second shot is three weeks after the first shot.
  * Your child will get the Pfizer vaccine. (This is the vaccine that will be available for kids ages 5 to 11.)
  * It is a smaller dose than the Pfizer vaccine for adults. (One-third of an adult dose.)
  * Your child will get a white CDC COVID-19 vaccine record card. (Bring your child's yellow childhood immunization card, if you have one)

Symptoms?
After receiving the COVID shot, it's possible that your child may have symptoms that may be caused by the vaccine. Side effects of the vaccine are not typically a cause for concern and should go away in a few days. However, if your child has any of these symptoms, regardless of cause, he/she should stay home from school: Loss of taste or smell, fever, chills, cough and shortness of breath.
If it’s possible these symptoms were caused by the vaccine and they resolve in 48 hours, with the last 24 hours being fever-free, the individual may return to work or school. If symptoms persist beyond 48 hours, individuals should stay home and get tested for COVID.  After being home with symptoms, parents should present proof of the recent COVID vaccine shot upon the student’s return at school.
Don’t forget to upload!
When your child receives his/her second shot, please upload proof of being fully vaccinated to PowerSchool at https://ps.mvwsd.org. Here's how to upload proof of vaccination. http://mvw.sd/upload.

Board meeting review: Enrollment growth

Based on projections, Mountain View will experience housing growth in the next 10-20 years that necessitates our District plan now for the increase of 3,430 K-8 students who are coming to schools that are not yet built. At a current land price of $15 million per acre, MVWSD has a billion dollar problem of how to acquire land and fund construction for these new schools.

The Board discussed the major hurdles of land acquisition and how to raise capital for new construction. For a deep dive into this topic, see the MVWSD Growth White Paper here. To view the presentation to the Board, click here.

High Fives

Glenda Vargas, a Crittenden math teacher, was nominated for the California League of Middle Schools Region Five Educator of the Year award. Vargas is one of eight nominees in Region 5 that are recognized for their dedication to middle school education. She will be honored at an awards celebration on Wednesday, November 10.

Community engagement: Security cameras

MVWSD’s Master Facility Plan and the Measure T Bond prioritized construction projects based on the criteria of safety, operational efficiency and short term growth. One of the projects identified in the Master Facility Plan was the need for security cameras in public areas at all school sites as a way to increase safety for students and staff members by deterring misconduct and preventing vandalism.

Members of the schools’ communities may engage in a series of feedback meetings through Jan. 2022 before the plan for security cameras is finalized.

Principals will gather feedback at regularly scheduled meetings such as Principal’s Coffee, School Site Council, PTA, and ELAC. Additionally, parents and neighbors may attend community meetings:
