Health and Wellness: Mental Health Continuum. After a year of review, the Health and Wellness department recommends and the Board discussed a new Social Emotional Learning (SEL) curriculum for use by counselors and teachers with support of counselors next year.
The H&W department also has studied the role of school counselors, new this year, and is making recommendations for how to further support students’ mental health needs next year and beyond. These efforts include: hiring a mental health specialist and seeking a contracted mental health specialist; forging agreements with universities to provide access to counseling fieldwork students; seeking reimbursement for mental health services through California's Children and Youth Behavioral Health Initiative (CYBHI); and building a referral stream to local mental health clinics, where trainee therapists see clients at minimal cost to the families.
