Budget Update: Progress on transparency and community partnership
|
Since returning to school in August, we have focused on creating additional transparency in our financial procedures and updating our vendor approval process. These changes will help us weather uncertain financial times ahead, caused in part by the unknown outcome of the parcel tax on the November 5th ballot and the end of lease revenue from two unused school sites. MVWSD is taking steps to enact new financial processes to ensure greater transparency, inclusive financial decision-making, and more efficient use of our resources.
At the September 5 Board meeting, the Board reviewed the District’s contracting process. MVWSD has since closed out services with or sent notices of cancellation to vendors contracted for leadership coaching and communications, including ILO Group, Peter Gorman and Associates, and Woodberry Associates. While these services are clearly important, we want to take the time to enact our new processes in order to ensure that every dollar spent is used in the best interest of our students, staff, and community.
MVWSD is developing a vendor approval process for vetting the companies and organizations we work with. This process will help us ensure that we are getting the best value for our money, reduce the risk of overpricing, and maintain accountability in how we choose our partners. The Board of Trustees discussed the first draft of this process publicly at their Oct. 3 meeting and will discuss it again at its Oct. 17 meeting.
MVWSD’s new Budget Advisory Committee (BAC) drew many applicants from across the community who are dedicated to improving our budgetary oversight. Six parent representatives have been selected for the BAC, which will also include a teacher, a classified staff member, and a board member. MVWSD’s Fiscal Services Department will support the committee. The Board of Trustees discussed this topic publicly at their Oct. 3 meeting and will discuss it again on Oct. 17. This committee will meet for the first time in the first two weeks of November. They will work to ensure financial transparency, foster understanding among all stakeholders, and promote public participation in our financial decision-making process. They will review MVWSD financials that are also available to the public in order to provide input and keep our community informed.
We believe these new processes will build a stronger, more transparent financial foundation for our district, allowing us to maintain our focus on academics and supporting our students. Thank you for your continued support.

Jose Antonio Vargas Elementary hosted a Kinder Literacy Night for their community. It was an event full of learning for parents and engaging activities for the whole family. Thank you to the Vargas Kinder Teachers and support staff for collaborating to help our youngest learners develop foundational literacy skills and strengthen the school-home connection.
