Dear MVWSD Families,

As we step into May, our schools are buzzing with energy and anticipation. These next five weeks are some of the busiest—and most joyful—times of the year. It’s when we come together to celebrate the hard work, growth, and accomplishments of our students and the educators who have supported them every step of the way.

Our calendars are full of meaningful moments. From 5th and 8th grade promotion ceremonies to our Reclassification celebration for our multilingual learners, this is a time to honor important milestones in our students’ journeys. These events, along with awards ceremonies and field trips, give us the opportunity to recognize not only academic achievements but also the growth, effort, and resilience our students have shown this year.

We see the personal growth our students and their families have experienced throughout the year. We know how far our students have come, and that none of this would be possible without the partnership, dedication, and support of our families.

Thank you for entrusting us with your students this year. It is truly an honor. We are proud of each and every one of them, and we are grateful to walk alongside you on this journey.

Warmly,

Jeffrey Baier
Superintendent

California Green Ribbon School honoree for 2025!

GRSThe Mountain View Whisman School District recently was named a 2025 California Green Ribbon School District Sustainability Honoree for conserving resources while promoting health and environmental literacy. The California Department of Education names Green Ribbon Schools as those at the forefront of nurturing the next generation’s capacity for creativity and critical thinking, thereby equipping them to become effective stewards of our environment.

For the second year in a row, MVWSD is one of only a handful of California districts to receive the Gold level of the California Green Ribbon School Award with a score of 81.30 - slightly higher than our score in 2024. Gold award winners are just a few points under national designation.

Pursuing the California Green Ribbon Schools award is a reflective process through which MVWSD is becoming a greener, more environmentally-conscious district. Our district passed resolutions and is pursuing regional and national certification that highlights our waste reduction and energy conservation. Our schools are powered by 79% renewable energy, have three-stream waste management/reduction, implemented solar, and are developing Outdoor Greening and Learning Spaces.

Board meeting review: Expanded Learning Programs, Non-Profit Corporation to Govern Staff Housing, Jewish American Heritage Month, Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month

Update on MVWSD+ Expanded Learning Programs: Staff shared an update on MVWSD+, the District’s afterschool and school break program provided for free to qualifying students. MVWSD+ provides consistent, caring, and inclusive afterschool programming that supports students academically, socially, emotionally, and physically through hands-on, engaging experiences. Offered at every MVWSD school, MVWSD+ helps students succeed academically and socially. Next year, the program will continue in collaboration with the YMCA of Silicon Valley and Beyond the Bell (BTB). Currently, MVWSD+ serves approximately 1,100 students during the school year and 700 in the summer. The Y will also continue to offer parent-paid after school programs at our elementary schools. Registration information will be shared in May. Learn more here.

Resolution Recognizing Jewish American Heritage Month: The Board passed a resolution recognizing the importance of honoring Jewish American Heritage Month. Please read the resolution here.

Resolution Recognizing Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month: The Board passed a resolution recognizing the importance of honoring Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month. Please read the resolution here.

Response To Immigration Enforcement: The Board approved several new and updated policies, including an updated Policy 5145.13 Response To Immigration Enforcement. This policy reaffirms the rights and privacy of all students at MVWSD—regardless of immigration status—by establishing clear protocols that limit disclosure of personal information and ensure schools remain safe, inclusive environments.  Learn more here.

Formation of a Non-Profit Corporation to Govern Staff Housing: The Trustees passed a resolution, the first step in the formation of a non-profit 501(c)(3) corporation — MVW Residences Corporation — to govern staff housing at MVW at the Sevens. A nonprofit housing corporation provides long-term stability for our staff housing project by offering dedicated oversight. While the Board of Trustees will still have high-level oversight, the nonprofit housing corporation will allow more Board focus on student learning.  Learn more here.

We appreciate our staff members!

Staff appreciationTeacher Appreciation Week is the week of May 5, and Classified Staff Appreciation Week is the week of May 19. We appreciate all of our certificated and classified staff members for their care of and dedication to our students and families. Look for spirit week activities beginning May 5 to celebrate our staff members during this special week.

Our Board of Trustees passed resolutions at yesterday's meeting to honor staff members. Please see the Day of the Teacher Resolution here and the Classified School Employees Week resolution here

Each staff member plays a crucial role in creating a nurturing and effective learning environment. We are grateful for every employee whose work contributes directly to students, even if they are not in classrooms. This month is a wonderful chance to recognize the hard work and commitment of all of these individuals, reminding them that their efforts do not go unnoticed and are deeply appreciated by the entire school district community.

Sustainability Partnership with NexTrex

NextrexnextrexThis Earth Month, Stevenson, Landels, Bubb, Castro, and Imai Elementary Schools are partnering with NexTrex to collect and recycle Number 4 plastics such as grocery bags, bubble wrap, and bread bags. This initiative supports the district's Sustainability Team in reducing plastic waste and protecting the environment. As momentum builds, more school sites are expected to join the effort. Together, these small actions can lead to big environmental impact!
