Dear Families and Staff Members:
Many families are facing significant challenges and fears because of their immigration status. I want to affirm the district’s commitment to follow the law by protecting immigrant students and make sure all of our students feel safe, welcome, and fully supported in our schools.
At the Mountain View Whisman School District – and all schools– education is a right, no matter their or their parents' actual or perceived national origin, citizenship, or immigration status.
Here’s what you can expect from MVWSD:
-
Immigration-enforcement officers will not be permitted on campus unless they present a signed judicial warrant or demonstrate exigent circumstances.
-
Schools will not share personal information about students or families for immigration-enforcement purposes without a court order or judicial subpoena.
-
School staff will not collect or maintain information about students’ or families’ citizenship status and will assert the right to refuse collaboration with immigration-enforcement officers to the fullest extent allowed by law.
It should be noted that no requests for information or access to our campus by any immigration official have been made. At its meeting on January 30, the Board of Trustees will consider a resolution affirming students and families regarding immigration enforcement similar to those now being drafted and agendized by Boards all over the county and the state. This resolution will be similar to the one the Board adopted in 2017.
We are committed to supporting families - not just with academics - but with counseling, resources, and food. If your family is facing challenges, please know we are here to help. Our mission is to ensure the success and well-being of each and every student, and we can achieve that by continuing to support and care for one another.
Sincerely,
Kevin Skelly, Ph.D.
Interim Superintendent
