Board meeting review: Shoreline, Strategic Plan 2027, Expanded Learning and Budget

The Board of Trustees met yesterday. Here are the highlights of the meeting:

* Shoreline Regional Park. The area near Shoreline Park was legislated as a special district in which all tax revenues that would have gone to local entities (schools) are devoted to this regional park/development area. The Board listened to the origins of the agreement, and how the next amendment to this agreement could help to meet the district’s $1.1 billion school facility needs. MVWSD and MVLA could leverage this tax revenue for teacher salaries, class size reduction, and capital projects to address enrollment growth in North Bayshore. Click here for the presentation.

* Strategic Plan 2027 update. Staff presented progress on Strategic Plan actions for the 2022-23 school year in the goal areas of Effective and Consistent Instruction, Social-Emotional Health, Inclusive and Welcoming Culture, Effective Employees and Equitable Resources. Click here for the presentation.

* Expanded Learning Opportunities Program update. Staff presented its plan for rolling out afterschool, school break, and summer programs for socioeconomically disadvantaged, foster youth, and English learner students through the state-funded Expanded Learning Opportunities Program (ELOP). MVWSD will partner with aftercare providers to roll out the first ELOP programs at Castro, Mistral and Theuerkauf in late Fall. Click here for the presentation.

* Budget: Staff presented the 2021-2022 Unaudited Actual Report. Click here for the presentation.

Honoring 9/11

911

Sunday marks the anniversary of 9/11. MVWSD honors those whose lives were lost in this tragedy, and all those who continue to grieve their loss. As we remember one of the most difficult events in American history, we will commemorate with a moment of reflection on Monday with our students.

This is a difficult topic to discuss, but we encourage you to talk with your child about the significance of this day. For guidance on how to navigate this subject in an age-appropriate way: 911memorial.org website and today.com.

Better Together: Hispanic Heritage Month

This year, MVWSD is officially launching Better Together, a culture and climate program to increase meaningful conversations in the classroom about identity and inclusion. For the 2022-23 school year, the theme is belonging. Authentic belonging can be achieved when students develop a positive self-identity and can connect with others in a meaningful way.

During the month of September, we are exploring the topic of identity with students. September 15 - October 15 also marks the occasion to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month. Developing a positive self-identity can help students reorient their misperceptions about how our differences divide or isolate us. Exploring identity during Hispanic Heritage Month gives us all the opportunity to recognize that a collective celebration of our individual differences can actually bring us closer together.

Families can access lessons and resources related to celebrating diversity using the #BetterTogether infographic found here on our website.

High Fives

All of our students are learning about bike and pedestrian safety through the City of Mountain View Safe Routes to School program. Students are planning their routes to school and participating in guided activities. Click here for pictures from MVWSD Facebook and for the Mountain View Voice feature story.

Castro Elementary’s PTA hosted a “Fun Run” fundraiser with APEX Leadership Co., whose representatives taught leadership lessons in classrooms over two weeks as students collected pledges. The fundraiser raised $3,247.87, and Castro students ran a total of 7,802 laps. The Castro PTA also sold over $500 worth of Spirit Gear at the event, with all proceeds going back to the school. Great work! See the pictures on Castro Facebook's page here.
