Board meeting review: June 1

The Board of Trustees met yesterday and discussed several topics:

School safety recommendations: MVWSD began a holistic review of school safety this fall including programs, procedures and facilities. The research phase of the project included safety audits of all campuses by security consultant Joffe, a survey of parents, staff and middle school students and discussions among principals and their school communities. The data has been reviewed by the Safety Advisory Task Force and formed into a set of recommendations for district-wide safety improvements. The Board will consider approval of these recommendations at the June 15 meeting for implementation to begin immediately. Please see the presentation here.

Strategic Plan 2027 progress and update: Staff gave the Board an update on the work completed this year toward the five goal areas in Strategic Plan 2027. These actions are improving our district for all students, families and staff in the areas of academics, wellness, social-emotional learning, parent engagement, hiring, facilities and technology. Please see the presentation here.

Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP) update: Staff presented an overview of the District’s new 2023-24 Local Control Accountability Plan. Like all school districts in California, our LCAP explains our goals and strategies for improving achievement for all students and provides updates on the prior year’s plan successes and challenges. The LCAP continues to be aligned to Strategic Plan 2027 to ensure that the District’s work is transparent, aligned and targeted. The focus of both plans is improving outcomes for students through implementing intentional and equitable actions. Please click here for the presentation and LCAP overview.

Castro Elementary staff planned a health and wellness resource fair for their families featuring more than a dozen service providers. Some of the offerings included behavioral and mental health services, health screenings, snacks, animal therapy, games and folklorico performances. See the pictures of this lively event here.

Santa Clara County Office of Education recently recognized the Castro Elementary Wellness Center during the county’s #HECKAWell mental health campaign. Wellness specialists facilitated a hands-on activity called “Tactile Tuesday,” a craft experience teaching youth how to make clay shapes while identifying their emotions. Castro Dolphins also starred in a social media video about why they like the Wellness Center.

On June 6, MVWSD eighth-graders are promoting from Crittenden and Graham Middle schools, and are on their way to MVLA and other local high schools this fall. In addition to many personal and individual accomplishments, we recognize our eighth-graders’ contributions to these school accomplishments. See the highlights here. Congrats!
