Supts Bike Safety - Aug 1, 2022

Prepare now for your student's safe commute

safe routes graphicDear Parents,

Mountain View is a busy place, and most of us are commuting to and from school/work daily. If your child plans to ride a bike or scooter to school, it’s critically important for their safety that you take time now before the start of the school year to plan their route, tune up their wheels and talk with them about road safety.

  • Plan the route. Review safe routes maps linked here and choose the safest route.

  • Practice. Bike, scoot or walk your child’s chosen route together several times at different times in the day as practice before the first day.

  • Check equipment. Make sure your child’s bike or scooter is in good working order, especially the brakes, and that they have a well-fitting helmet. It is both illegal and dangerous for children to ride without one. Here’s how a helmet should fit.

  • Talk about safety. Review these rules of the road with your child. Talk to them about staying alert and not using technology while riding. (Phone use is dangerous. Earbuds are illegal.) Tell them your expectations of where they should be and when, and who they should be with. Let them know that it’s better to arrive late and safe than to take an unsafe shortcut.

  • Get involved. Volunteers and participation are needed for the City’s Bicycle/Pedestrian Advisory Committee, which works to make our city safer for walking and biking.

Thank you for helping to keep our children and our community safe.

Respectfully,

Ayindé Rudolph, Ed.D.
Superintendent
