New administrators for the 2020-21 school year

Dear Parents and Friends,

I wanted to let you know of several administrative changes for the 2020-21 school year. These changes were made with students’ needs at the forefront, and effectively utilize the amazing talent and resources available to MVWSD. We accelerated the timeline for filling administrative positions so that in this time of COVID-19 school closure, staff members have as much time as possible to prepare for the new school year.

I regretfully announce the resignation of Heidi Smith as the District’s Director of Federal, State & Strategic Programs after three years. She is relocating out of the area to be closer to family. Before her director position, she was the principal at Huff Elementary for three years, during which time it earned California Distinguished School and National Blue Ribbon School honors. She has been a valuable member of our team, and we wish her the best.

Please join me in congratulating these administrators. I know that they will hit the ground running and build on planning already set in place for the new school year. I am excited to see all that they will accomplish for our students and community.

Geoff ChangGeoff Chang is returning to our District to be the District’s new Director of Federal, State & Strategic Programs overseeing Title I and English Language Learners (ELL). He was the principal at Huff Elementary from 2016-2019, and was the principal at Crittenden Middle School for four years before Huff.

Mr. Chang is known for his innovative use of technology in instruction and communication. Prior to joining MVWSD, Mr. Chang worked in the New York City Department of Education, serving as Assistant Principal at the Lower Manhattan Community Middle School, Selection Manager for the New York City Teaching Fellows, and as a teacher of History, Language Arts, and Special Education.

Lauren PetreaLauren Petrea has been named Graham Middle School’s Principal. Since early February, Ms. Petrea has taken an active role in supporting Graham as Interim Administrator in the MVWSD Educational Services Department and then as Graham’s interim principal.

Ms. Petrea has experience as an instructional coach and principal. She has been in education for 17 years as a classroom teacher, GATE coordinator, instructional coach, assistant principal, and principal. Most recently she has served as the principal at Woodside Elementary School. She also has been the assistant principal at Bret Harte Middle School, and principal and assistant principal at Booksin Elementary School (San Jose Unified School District).

Colleen WalshColleen Walsh, currently Substitute Assistant Principal at Crittenden Middle School since January, has been named Assistant Principal. Ms. Walsh has served MVWSD in a variety of roles including middle school social studies and reading intervention teacher. For the past several years she has been the district’s middle school literacy coach. Ms. Walsh also has been an educator at Beaumont Unified School District and Elk Grove Unified School District.

The District will continue to support these schools and departments during the transition.
