Learning Recovery Plan

Learning Recovery Plan
LRP thumbnailThe COVID pandemic continues to challenge us all in many ways. Last year’s distance learning was an incredible feat by our educators and parents. However, one of the many lingering effects of the last 18 months is that some students still have “unfinished learning” compared to the learning they would have completed in a typical year.

We are proud to announce the MVWSD Learning Recovery Plan. The major tenet of this plan is that all students will get more practice on foundational skills through instruction tailored to them based on their academic needs, determined by assessment data. Additional learning opportunities will come in the form of instruction in the classroom, in addition to access to professional tutors - either in-person or virtually.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Is this service for all students or only those who test below grade level?
All students will get additional learning opportunities to practice foundational skills through our Learning Recovery Plan.

2. Does this email mean that my child has unfinished learning that may require tutoring?
Not necessarily. The pandemic has affected each child differently and some students need more support than others. All students will get additional learning opportunities to practice skills, and this email is to let you know what your child’s specific opportunities are. The tutoring program offered is based on children’s i-Ready assessment results. Please check your child’s i-Ready report for your child's areas of strengths and areas for improvements. Please see question #4 for how to access and view your child’s i-Ready reports.

3. How do I know if or in what subjects my student is behind in?  Or what specific areas he/she needs extra help, extra challenge or specific concept reinforcement?
These additional learning opportunities are individually tailored to students based on their academic needs as determined by assessment data (i-Ready). Please see question #4 for how to access and use your child’s i-Ready reports.

4. How do I get access to my child’s i-Ready assessment? I would like to understand her learning needs.
i-Ready provides data and resources to parents and teachers so they may support their students’ academic progress. Parents can access their child’s i-Ready reports after each diagnostic assessment administration.
Here's how to access your child’s i-Ready information.
Here's how to view the three types of i-Ready reports.

5. Who should I contact if I need to make changes to my permission form response?
Please contact your child’s school front office and they will be glad to help.

6. Is the permission form only for after school tutoring? If we don’t sign up for afterschool learning, is it still possible to get the boosted core instruction and RTI in the classroom during the school day?
Boosted core instruction will happen for your student regardless of whether you complete the learning recovery plan permission form for afterschool learning. The permission form is only for families who want their child to participate in additional learning opportunities outside of class time.

7. Can I make a change to the format or provider for my child’s additional learning opportunities outside of class time?
Please consult with your school principal about any changes you would like to request to the tutoring opportunity assigned to your child.

8. Would this be for the rest of the school year or only until she is caught up?
The additional learning opportunities will continue through the end of this school year.  The online, after-school tutoring will be for 10-15 weeks.  The boosted core instruction for all students during the school day is for the entire school year.

9. What is boosted core instruction? What they will do and which regular programs they are going to miss because of this extra learning. Are students getting pulled out of class?
Boosted Core Instruction occurs during school day as a part of the regular core instruction/ RTI instruction and includes:
  * Using data to alert teachers to reteach foundational concepts.
  * Training for teachers to help them tailor instruction to the needs of each student.
  * Adding more people (hired tutors) to provide direct instruction in small groups in RTI classes. This allows group sizes to be smaller and for more targeted instruction in literacy.

Students will not be pulled out of class for Boosted Core Instruction.
