Board hears middle school schedule options, results of elective survey

The Board of Trustees recently heard from the Middle School Schedule Task Force about two school schedule options.

Balancing all students’ instructional needs within a school schedule is an immense challenge. Through much research, study, and conversation, the group has narrowed its focus to these schedule possibilities; either a 7 period day or an 8 period day  (View those options and the presentation here).

Principals have been meeting with parents and staff to review the options. Additionally, staff members have been given a survey so they can provide specific feedback. The final schedule recommendation will come to the Board of Trustees on December 7. The schedule will be implemented at both middle schools in 2018-19.

Elective survey data: The results of the ThoughtExchange survey will help refine the middle schools’ elective offerings. 427 adults contributed 1275 thoughts to the survey. 1350 students contributed 2550 thoughts. This feedback from parents of students in grades 5-8, middle school students and staff included their top choices of electives, important considerations for the school schedule and thoughts and questions. View the data here.

Moving forward: Human Growth and Development

The Board of Trustees last week approved offering the “Puberty Talk,” human growth and development curriculum, to current fifth-graders as it has in the past. To view the presentation, click here.

After hearing some parents’ concerns, the Board approved a curriculum review process last spring, as well as the postponement of the fifth-grade unit of Human Growth and Development. Last week, the Board agreed to move away from that process. Instead, the District will wait to convene a curriculum review committee until the state’s health framework is released in 2019.

The District will work to schedule the offering for current fifth-graders, and will update parents.
